This marked track traverses moraine through beech forest from Lake Sylvan with some great views of the Dart valley

Please note that the Lake Sylvan track is currently closed due to storm damage in February 2020 so the loop cannot be completed

Difficulty: CHALLENGING
Time: 8-11hrs

2-3 hr to Lake Sylvan-Rockburn Hut site
6-8 hr Rockburn Hut Site to Routeburn car park

The marked track traverses moraine through beech forest from Lake Sylvan. The Rockburn Hut site is nestled in the forest, with a chasm, river beaches and pools closeby. Climb through forest to the fragile Sugarloaf Saddle where there are great views of the Rockburn and Routeburn Valleys. The descent to the Routeburn Track is steep.

Rockburn Hut has been removed due to severe storm damage. There is a new camp shelter and toilet nearby, owned by Dart River, that the public can use.

You can start this walk at either end by starting at the Routeburn car park or from the Lake Sylvan track which connects to this track.
