Earnslaw Burn

Follow the track through bush to the tussock basin at the head of this valley for impressive views of an icefall on Mt Earnslaw/Pikirakatahi

Difficulty: CHALLENGING
Time: Full day/Multi day

About 20 minutes drive from Kinloch or Glenorchy, the Earnslaw Burn Track is a challenging day walk or multi-day hike with fantastic views of an icefall on Mt. Earnslaw.  The track follows the Earnslaw Burn through the bush to the tussock basin and viewpoint at the head of the Rees Valley.

An overhanging rock just within the forest on the true right (looking downstream) of Earnslaw Burn can be used for shelter; the river crossing to get to the bivvy is dangerous in heavy rain.

Moderate to high level backcountry skills and experience, including navigation and survival skills required as the track can be difficult to find in places and is mainly unformed and muddy. Unbridged stream and river crossings can also be expected. This track is not recommended for young children.
